Darkness fell two hours later. The travel party had set up camp for the last time. The following noon they would reach their destination. The soldiers sat in a circle and watched the pieces of venison turning on the spit over the campfire. The smell of the roasting meat made the prince’s mouth water. One of the men, whom Karek had particularly noticed from the beginning of their journey on account of his ebony skin, was sitting a little away from the others. His clothing was black too, so that only the whites of his eyes stood out in the firelight. Karek and Mussand were a little to the side too, while Brawl had made himself comfortable close to the flames, where a wild boar was being roasted. The places nearest the fires were generally reserved for the older and highest-ranking soldiers. Karek watched the brown-crusted wild boar turning on the spit, its four legs sticking out. He suddenly realised that despite his hunger, he was feeling sorry for the animal. He quickly suppressed the odd, piteous sensation.

Brawl looked over at the black man and growled: ‘Teehee, Inky. You wouldn’t want to be sleeping too near the fire.’

Some of the men laughed.

The pair of white, flashing eyes were suddenly joined by a set of flashing white teeth – it seemed like a hundred of them, thought Karek. The mouth belonging to them remained silent, merely grinning in response – still and contemplative.

Brawl waited a moment, then looked for – and found – a possible new victim. Karek. ‘Hey, Sack of Spuds! Don’t you go and eat the whole boar on us now. Let the others have a go first,’ he bleated.

‘Did I just hear a horse farting?’ asked Karek innocently.

Amazing how quickly I’ve adapted to this milieu. I’m undoubtedly going to be a first-rate soldier.

Brawl jumped up, intent on laying into his new ‘friend’.

A soldier grasped him firmly by the arm. ‘Easy now. You’re going to have plenty of opportunity for acquainting yourselves with each other. During training, you’ll be able to mix it up to your hearts’ content from morning to night – and I don’t just mean verbally.’ Knowing laughter in the dim light confirmed this statement.

Brawl furiously shook off the soldier’s arm, sitting down again, however.

‘Then I’ll deal with butterball later,’ he muttered.

Some of the soldiers began to cut off pieces from the grilled animals. Curious, Karek peered over at the black man. He wondered if he should go over to him but decided to wait and get a portion of wild boar first. Sometime later, full and heavy, he went off into the undergrowth to relieve himself before settling down on his roll-up mattress. Karek had forgotten about the black man, he was so tired. Soon he was fast asleep.
